I want to start by apologizing for my lack of blog updates since October. From this point, I will be adding updates to our "Class Story" on Class Dojo. Please look there for further updates. Thank you.
Sorry for the delay in my blog/newsletter posting. My goal is to update every two weeks, obviously I am a week behind. I will do better about getting information out to you, but as always please don't hesitate to call or email me with any questions and concerns.
This week we will be starting multiplication and division! Students are excited and nervous at the same time for this new venture. We are choosing to teach these skills together as the strategies are the opposite each other. We want students to think about the facts in a multiplication and division mind set. Many students have some background knowledge which is great! Please begin (or continue) to work with your students on multiplication fact fluency. To score a 3 on the multiplication Essential Learning, students must be able to memorize their multiplication facts. Level 2 is using strategies to solve for multiplication and we will start there building up a level 3. Our multiplication unit will expand at least two weeks. All of that being said, we will be starting XtraMath in the classroom for math fact fluency. Students will bring their password home tomorrow, feel free to log in at home as well. We will continue our lessons on main idea this week but expanding it to a "multi-paragraph text" (Level 3). The "post-core" assessment will be this Friday. Main idea is always a challenging task, but I'm confident students will be ready! Data binder went home this past Wednesday, and will not go home this week. You may have heard we have had difficulties with report card/progress report printing. For the most up to date grade information, please log in to ParentVue or review the EL scores in the data binders. As most teacher do, we will be participating in Scholastic Book Clubs. The first order will go home tomorrow. You'll have the opportunity to order online (the code will be attached) or to return the form to me. If you are interested in purchasing the books for a gift for your student, just let me know and I'll contact you directly when the books arrive. Lastly, parent-teacher conferences are right around the corner. It is the goal for all teachers at Grassy Creek to meet with each family for a face to face conference. Be on the lookout for sign up information, to ensure the best time for you! Important Dates: 9/24 Family Learning Night and Scholastic Book Fair 10/1-5 Parent Teacher Conferences (more info coming soon) 10/5 Fall Party 10/8-19 Fall Break Whew! We've made it three weeks into the school year. We have been working hard to establish routines and procedures in the classrooms. During the first two weeks of school all of the students completed baseline assessments on the 3rd grade Essential Learnings. We've been working hard to graph that information in our data binders, which will be coming home this Wednesday (8/22). Along those same lines, we will be having our EL Learning Night on Wednesday 8/29 from 6-7 in the media center. Please join us then for more information regarding our Essential Learnings and mid term reports.
Since we've been busy learning about Nonfiction Text Features, Rounding numbers to the nearest 10 and nearest 100, and adding and subtracting three digit numbers it is time for assessments on the Essential Learnings. All of the students are ready for the assessment and I think they will do great. Students will be bringing home their math and ELA notebooks over the next couple of nights, please help your students study these skills. Starting next week we will be learning about Main Idea and Area and Perimeter. Currently, Class Dojo is the best form of communication. Its quick and easy for me to send quick reminders to families. If you are not seeing these reminders please let me know as soon as possible. As always, please reach out if you have any questions, concerns or comments. Rebekah The students and I worked together to compile the following list of classroom expectations. It was agreed that students who break these rules will lose a Dojo point, but student who exceed the expectations or who are setting an example will be awarded Dojo points. Students will be keeping track of their points and will be able to cash them in for various items throughout the school year: Teacher Chair, No Homework Pass, Lunch with the Teacher, Sticker, Computer Time, Sit with a Friend, and more to come!
This week we are continuing building routines and procedures as well as beginning the baseline data for the Essential Learnings. We are practicing our Daily 5 reading stations (Read to Self, Read to Someone, Work on Writing and Work on Words as well as reviewing second grade math skills while we learn how to use our Math Notebooks. Ask your students what they have been practicing.
On Monday, students brought home their agendas for the 2018-2019 school year. Students will use these to record their daily Dojo points as well as any homework they may have. Please continue to send them back to school each day along with the orange communication folder. Most of you are connected through Class Dojo, if you are not please use the code that was sent home last week to connect. Not only will you be able to track the great days yours students have but you'll also be able to communicate easily with myself, related arts teachers and school administration. If you need another code, please feel free to send a note to school with students, I'll be happy to send the code home again. Important Dates: Monday 7/30 - Day 4 of Related Arts Friday 8/2 - Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) assessment For these first two days, we will be spending most of our time building classroom routines and procedures while getting to know each other and building rapport. There will be no homework these two days, but students will be engaging in some math and literacy activities to help me determine the needs of the students in this classroom.
I will be using this blog for our weekly newsletters and any additional pertinent information. Already on this page you can learn about me, view our schedule and connect to ClassDojo, our classroom management system.
This is going to be a great year! Please check back for the most recent classroom updates. |
